Max Holloway and Chan Sung Jung, also known as “The Korean Zombie,” faced off in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Singapore on Saturday. The highly anticipated matchup lived up to expectations as the two featherweights engaged in an exhilarating battle, with Holloway ultimately securing a third-round knockout victory.
The first round showcased the intense and action-packed fight that fans had hoped for. After Jung landed a powerful punch that shook Holloway, the latter swiftly retaliated and nearly knocked Jung down. The second round saw Holloway successfully knocking Jung down with a right hand, but Jung managed to survive and mount his own offensive attacks.
The third round began with Jung unleashing a relentless barrage of punches on Holloway. Despite landing clean power shots, Jung fell victim to a devastating overhand right from Holloway, resulting in a knockout.
Reflecting on Jung’s aggressive performance in the third round, Holloway praised him, stating, “He’s the Korean Zombie for a reason… The man’s a myth. The man’s a legend. I’m just lucky my right hand landed before his did.” In the aftermath of the defeat, Jung announced his retirement from fighting, expressing doubts about his chances of becoming a world champion.
“I’m going to stop fighting,” Jung said through an interpreter. “I’ve always aimed to become a champion. I’m not here to be ranked third, fourth or fifth. I tried my absolute best to prepare for Max Holloway. I really, really believed I could beat him and I ended up failing. I don’t think I have the opportunity anymore. I think I’m going to stop fighting for now.”
An emotional Jung left the octagon with tears streaming down his face as the crowd serenaded him with “Zombie” by The Cranberries, a song that had become synonymous with his iconic entrances.
