Stephen Thompson, a former UFC welterweight title challenger, believes that two current champions in the UFC set the benchmark in their respective specialties.
Thompson is set to make his welterweight return against Michel Pereira at UFC 291 on July 29th. After facing back-to-back losses, Thompson bounced back with a victory over Kevin Holland at UFC Orlando last year.
Thompson was initially scheduled to fight Pereira earlier this year, but due to multiple reschedules, the matchup will finally take place. This fight is crucial for Thompson as he aims to climb back up the ladder and secure another potential title shot.
Thompson has faced some of the greatest fighters in UFC history, such as Anthony Pettis and Tyron Woodley. With his extensive experience, he has earned the credibility to assess the top fighters in the UFC today.
Stephen Thompson Identifies Two Standout UFC Champs
In a recent interview with SportsKeeda, Thompson revealed his choice for the best striker in the UFC currently (excluding himself).
“Israel Adesanya,” Thompson confidently answered.
Despite his reservations about grappling opponents, Thompson also commended a reigning UFC champion as the organization’s top grappler.
“Islam [Makhachev],” Thompson acknowledged.
Israel Adesanya is expected to defend his middleweight title against the winner of Robert Whittaker vs. Dricus du Plessis in September. Adesanya regained the belt in a rematch against Alex Pereira at UFC 287.
Islam Makhachev delivered an unforgettable performance against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 earlier this year. He is aiming for a return in October, with a potential rematch against Charles Oliveira.
Thompson recognizes the talents of Adesanya and Makhachev and acknowledges that they stand out among their peers in their respective specialties.
